Program Instruction Details
This is a hybrid 60% asynchronous / 40% synchronous, project-based learning program taught by Rick Plautz, Brandcenter professor of practice. Assignments will be broken up into short, digestible screen capture tutorials and completed on your own time.
Motion design and animation have become ubiquitous in the world of branded content creation. Whether the client requires an Instagram Story, YouTube Pre-Roll, animated GIF, explainer, case study, trailer, or anything else – the content will most likely include an animated asset.
Adobe After Effects is the industry standard for creating these animated assets. For quick-turn assets or idea pitches, it’s too costly and time-consuming to take these tasks out of house. Creatives at every level should understand the power of After Effects to execute on concepts and communicate ideas.
After Effects is a powerful tool to have in or add to any creative’s arsenal. BCX created this 2-week crash course in After Effects tailored for the advertising and branding industry.
You might ask: “Why can’t I just sign up for a LinkedIn Learning course about this?”
You can… but this BCX program gives you the added benefit of 1-on-1 support to help answer your individual questions, provide creative feedback, and integrate the knowledge from Rick’s 10+ years of experience.
At the end of each assignment, participants will collaborate virtually, share work and knowledge with each other, and ask the instructor questions.
Rick will also be available throughout the program for 1-on-1 meetings to discuss technical issues, concepting help, etc.
In two weeks, you will have a collection of animated assets, made by you, showing your competence in After Effects.
- Animation Basics: Theory / Practice
- Keyframe Interpolation: Controlling how objects move
- Motion Design Theory: Inertia, easing, offset timing, match-cutting, etc.
- Creating and preparing assets in Photoshop or Illustrator to be used in After Effects
- Exporting / Compressing with Adobe Media Encoder
Assets you’ll make from scratch (from guided tutorials):
- Animated GIF
- 10-second Instagram Ad
- YouTube Pre-Roll
- Logo reveal / End Card
You will walk away from this program knowing enough about After Effects to use it to effectively get your ideas on a screen for others to see. You will be able to understand what constitutes compelling and engaging motion design, and how to communicate those needs to other artists.
Who Should Enroll?
Any creative who would like to sharpen their skills and expand their knowledge into motion design for branding and advertising.
Make sure to have a computer, a strong internet connection, the Zoom application, and access to the Adobe Creative Suite. All other software, resources, and references will be provided.
Please contact email@example.com with any questions.
After completing a BCX program, participants will receive a certificate of completion, enhanced understanding of the program material, and a new network of professional colleagues.
Frequently Asked Questions
The course will be 60% asynchronous / 40% synchronous; meaning the learning will be done individually with meetings at the end of each assignment to show work and share tips. ‘Office Hours’ will also be available.
Of course, and they can be about anything. The instructor will be available to give expert advice regarding assignments, troubleshooting, or brainstorming help, inside or outside of class projects.
There will be a 1-hour kickoff meeting at the start of the program and the tutorials for the first project will be released. The kickoff will be an opportunity to meet the other students, talk to Rick, and ask questions as needed.
Rick developed short assignments that will take no more than 90 minutes to watch and do, with sections broken up to be no longer than 25 minutes (usually much shorter).
The participants will gather (virtually) to share work, tips, and ask questions. Afterwards, Rick will talk about the next project and release the next batch of tutorials.
