Research work by Brandcenter Strategy Concentration Chair Caley Cantrell was recently published in the journal: AIS Transactions on Human-Computer Interaction.
The article, “Exploring the Intersection of the Digital Divide and Artificial Intelligence: A Hermeneutic Literature Review,” was researched and written in collaboration with Lemuria Carter and Dapeng Liu of the University of New South Wales (previously of the VCU School of Business). It examines ways in which artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning may be a new frontier for the Digital Divide: the idea that some populations who do not have access to technology struggle as the world becomes increasingly wired.
“In the case of AI, consideration should be made to ensure that AI does not create a second form of divide,” says Cantrell. “It’s critical that AI learns from all populations, and that all populations are aware that AI is learning and acting on them.”
