Prerequisites

All applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in any field and meet the prerequisites for their track as outlined below.

 

What we're looking for in all tracks: people who demonstrate a zealous talent for their chosen craft.

Art direction

  • Working knowledge of Photoshop and InDesign
  • Knowledge of layout, design and typography

To meet these requirements, you must have one of the following:

  • One year of work experience
  • Completion of a related undergraduate class
  • Completion of a related tutorial (e.g., Lynda.com)

What we're also looking for: Show us good typography, design and presentation. We want to see an understanding of concept in the work you submit.

Copywriting

  • No prerequisites other than a bachelor's degree in any field

What we're also looking for: Show us your talent for creating fresh, surprising, original, smart, attention-getting communication. Your writing should demonstrate conceptual thinking, not just clever words.

 

Creative brand management

  • Proficiency in Excel, Powerpoint/Keynote and Pages
  • Successful completion of a college math class
  • GRE score around 300 or GMAT around 540*
    • Have your score sent electronically to VCU (GRE code 5570; GMAT code LP8)

*A GRE/GMAT waiver is available in the application if you have a GPA of 3.5 or higher or two years of relevant work experience.

What we're also looking for: Show us that you can combine business skills with creative thinking. We are looking for applicants who can analyze business situations and use creative and strategic thinking to make decisions for brands.

 

Experience design

  • Working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Light HTML/CSS knowledge is beneficial
  • A specialty such as video production, animation, 3-D imaging, design or writing

What we're also looking for: Show us your knowledge of technology to create strategic and engaging consumer experiences.

Strategy

  • Proficiency in Excel, Powerpoint/Keynote and Pages
  • GRE score around 300 or GMAT score around 540*
    • Have your score sent electronically to VCU (GRE code 5570; GMAT code LP8)

What we're also looking for: Show us how you arrive at interesting insights leading to strong, compelling ideas.
